The Boston Marathon is the Holy Grail for serious marathoners. The challenge to qualify for the marathon alone makes it an event reserved for the elite, making it a lifelong accomplishment and landmark for those who are qualified.
A qualifying time from another marathon is needed to gain entry to Boston. Here are the standards for the 2020 Boston Marathon.

1. Runners with a time at least 20 minutes faster than the standard for their gender and age can register within the first 48 hours (first two days) of the first registration week.

2. Runners with a time of at least 10 minutes faster than the standard for their gender and age can register on the third and fourth day of first registration week.

3. Runners with a time of at least 5 minutes faster than the standard for their gender and age can register on the fifth and sixth day of the first registration week. The first registration week closes after the sixth day.

4. If vacant slots still remain in the 30,000-person field after the first registration week, runners with qualifying times equal to the standard time for their gender and age can register on the first up to the third day of the second registration week. The second registration week closes after the third day.
